Gillingham boss Peter Taylor instructed his team not to panic if things weren’t going to plan on Tuesday night.
It was something midfielder Bradley Dack to note of.
The Gills conceded an equaliser before the break but fought back to take all three points from an exciting game at Priestfield.
Dack said: “It was a good game to play in and good to test yourself against a so-called top side.
“They are tipped for promotion and so to get three points off them is a big step in the right direction.
“In the first 20 minutes they were the better side and they did create some good chances that they should have put away.
“But the gaffer said to us before the game that if we do have a bad five or 10 minutes, don’t worry about it, he said ‘you will settle down and do the right things and it will all come good’. We listened to him and that’s what happened.”
Cody McDonald’s 26 minute header had put the Gills ahead.
“It was a great feeling to go 1-0 up and we do seem to play well against Peterborough,” said the 20-year-old.
“We played well last year against them and drew 2-2, after they scored in the 97 minute, but (on Tuesday) we were resilient and we defended really well, especially second half. I didn’t think they had that many chances and it was a good night for us.”
Asked is last season’s game was on his mind, Dack said: “You don’t really think about that when you are in the heat of the moment, you are just trying to close the game out and obviously we did that better than last year.”
Dack also enjoyed meeting up again with former team-mate Jack Payne.
Payne captained Peterborough on his return to Priestfield.
“It was enjoyable,” said Dack.
“I have known Payney for a long time and it was good to play against him. He was obviously disappointed that they didn’t win but he is a good player and a good friend.”
