Bradley Dack scored his first goal of 2017 in a performance of old on Tuesday.
Last season’s League 1 player-of-the-year admitted afterwards he has struggled this term but that his performance in the 2-2 draw with AFC Wimbledon was up there with his best.
Gillingham fans will be desperate for Dack to regain his top form as they battle against the drop and the player hopes that will be the case.
He said: “It is up there with my best performances this season, this year definitely.
“I am over the injuries now, touch wood, and hopefully I can carry on this form.
“It felt good and I almost felt back to my old self. It has been a long time coming.
“It has been a tough season but I have to try and play like that now for the next 13 games and to try and get this team out of the position it is in.”
The Gills sit just two points above the drop zone and Dack added: “(This season) hasn’t reached the heights of last year but it’s hard when you are playing in a team that is struggling. We are all struggling at the minute.
“We haven’t played as well as we could and we all know that. If we had played like (we did on Tuesday) the whole season we would be up there. We have to play like that for the 13 games.”
Despite some positive signs on Tuesday, Dack admitted the players were low afterwards.
“Everyone was a bit flat,” said the 23-year-old. “We performed well and the gaffer said to us he would take that every week but we are at a point now where maybe the performance doesn’t matter.
“We have to start getting results. It feels like a loss. We played so well and had chances to win. That is where we have to be more ruthless in both boxes.
“There are 13 games left and we are in a relegation battle. If on Saturday (against Southend) we play like we did Tuesday, then nine times out of 10 you are going to get three points.”
