Chairman Paul Scally is confident that Bradley Dack will again become a man in demand.
The Gills turned down a big-money offer from Bristol City for the 22-year-old in January but an expected move away from the club this summer never materialised.
It means Dack will be lining up for the Gills in League 1 and that, Mr Scally admits, is something the player has to get his head around.
He said: “Bradley did fantastically well last season and we did have the offer from Bristol City in January, which we turned down and he and everyone thought, I am sure, that it was a given that he would be going in the summer.
“Justin (Edinburgh, the manager) and I spoke and agreed that unless it is a club that is right for Bradley and the deal is right, he is with us, he is our player.”
Dack made headlines throughout the summer, with links to Crystal Palace.
Mr Scally said: “Young players pick up vibes off the media and they get told things by agents.
“They get sold the dream and told they are going to be millionaires overnight. I am sure that has happened with Bradley, to a certain extent.
“You can forgive him for being a little surprised that he is still here, given that he thought he would be playing Championship football right now.
“Bradley has got his head down and knows that if he does it again here this season, then he has his own marketability and it is his own choice how he does it. He knows that, he is not stupid.
“He is committed to this football club and I am sure he has got over the disappointment.
“He is a young lad, he has everything in front of him and has everything to gain by getting his head down and focusing on another good start to the season.
“I know he will do that because he is no fool. He understands and I am sure that at the right time, the right club will come in for him and he will have a great future in the game.”
