Callum Davies will be given every chance to prove himself under Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh.
Gills manager Edinburgh has yet to see the defender play but Davies has been spending the summer shaking off a long-term injury.
Davies sat the second half of the season out with an ankle injury and has yet to show Edinburgh what he is capable of.
The central defender, with 39 Gillingham appearances to his name, is expected to be fit again for the start of the 2015-16 season.
Edinburgh said: “I have never seen him play and there is no point me dressing it up any other way.
“What I hear from people at this football club is that he can play a part in the forthcoming season; there is no doubt about that.
“I think everyone has seen that he is a warrior and he is a good player. If we can keep him fit then he can play a part.”
