New first team coach Jamie Day is more than happy for a role reversal at Gillingham.
Up until last week he was manager of Welling, with Ady Pennock acting as an advisor.
A roller-coaster week has seen Pennock take on the head coach role at Gillingham and Day assisting.
Day said: “I have done it before with the gaffer, at Forest Green. It’s not a problem, I know what my role is and what I need to do and the work that needs doing to help the gaffer.
“It is not a problem for me. I am happy.”
Day only returned to Welling in November, after a disappointing spell in charge at Braintree, but he quickly began to turn around the Park View Road side’s fortunes.
He previously guided the Wings to the Conference Premier.
A stint as manager of big-spending Ebbsfleet ended prematurely but these experiences are all valuable, says the coach.
“There have been ups and downs in that time,” he added. “All the experience is good experience and it is nice to be at a really big club in Kent, a Football League club.
“This is an opportunity now that I have to take, and the gaffer will take as well.
“There have been a lot of changes recently, going in as first team coach with Mark (Goldberg) at Welling and then taking over, then the gaffer (Pennock) came in as football consultant to help me out, it has been all very quick.
“I haven’t been back at Welling very long, but it was a fantastic time at a club I really love, but for me coming to Gills is something I couldn’t turn down and I am really looking forward to it.”
Sidcup-based Day brings with him plenty of contacts. He started out at Arsenal as a player, under Arsene Wenger, and also played for Bournemouth. He has previously leant on both teams for young loan recruits.
Day said: “Once you start on the management ladder you build up your contacts and you get contacts at clubs you have been at before.
“Arsenal and Bournemouth have been really good to me, especially Bournemouth. It helps the gaffer, who has enough contacts himself, but we could use them if needed and that is a benefit of having that playing background.”
