Peter Gill has joined Gillingham as their first-team coach having previously worked at Leyton Orient, Barnet, Cambridge United and Charlton Athletic

Gillingham’s new first-team coach Peter Gill has described himself as a details man.

South Londoner Gill has a varied CV that’s seen him coach in Australia, at Leyton Orient, Barnet, Cambridge United and most recently Charlton Athletic before agreeing to join Mark Bonner as Gillingham’s first-team coach.

Following his move to the Gills, he’s described how he’ll be aiming to improve individuals for the benefit of the team.

He said: “I like to work with individuals, to really hone in on the technical detail. I think that’s really important.

“Spending time and building relationships with players, working with them as individuals first and then helping them collectively as a team as well, so (it’s about) that individual focus and making sure that we can improve the individuals to create a better team, that is my philosophy.

“I’ll be looking through as many player clips as possible, to make sure I have got the best picture of every player and really then be able to help them from day one.

“I’ll be on the laptop looking at as many games and clips as possible.”

One player he won’t need any introduction to is defender Shad Ogie.

As youth team boss at Leyton Orient, he plucked the defender out of the Hornchurch youth academy. It was at Orient where Ogie eventually turned pro, playing 44 games before his move to the Gills.

Gill, who currently lives in Ebbsfleet, has known the club’s goalkeeper coach Deren Ibrahim since they were kids and coached at Charlton at the same time as newly appointed assistant Anthony Hayes was there.

He had previously worked together with Gills boss Bonner at Cambridge United and said: “I think I understand him and how he wants to work, his values and his ethics on and off the pitch and importantly, understanding how that translates onto the pitch.

“(The opportunity) to be working with Mark and the other staff was a no-brainer for me (to join) and I am really looking forward to getting going.”
