Striker Dominic Samuel is a major doubt for Gillingham’s trip to Sheffield United.
The Reading loanee picked up a knee injury in the goalless draw against Coventry City on Saturday.
He limped off after just 12 minutes having overstretched while trying to change direction.
Samuel was back at Reading on Sunday for an assessment and had a scan on Monday. He will now see a specialist and boss Justin Edinburgh said he doubted the striker would be available this weekend.
The Gills are unable to bring anyone else in as the loan deadline has passed.
Rory Donnelly was Samuel’s replacement at the weekend but the Gills lacked spark against Coventry and the forwards failed to get a shot on target.
Cody McDonald was unused but his match fitness is still lacking having not played competitively since breaking his foot at Millwall on December 19.
McDonald did get an hour in a run-out for the development side, playing upfront alongside Jermaine McGlashan, who played the full game and scored a late goal.
Other options for boss Justin Edinburgh, for a player to partner Luke Norris upfront, could be Brennan Dickenson while returning Bradley Dack or George Williams could operate in a more advanced role or alternatively leave Norris as the lone striker.
