There were some standout performances for Gillingham on Saturday and two-goal striker Dominic Samuel was among them.
The former Blackburn front-man struck twice on his first game back for the Gills in September - in a 2-0 win against Blackpool - but had gone nine games without a goal since then. That run was ended as his quickfire double wiped out Woking’s lead in the FA Cup first round match.
Assistant boss Paul Raynor said: “He came in like a house on fire, he scored two on his debut, but has been very unfortunate. He has had blocks, keepers making fantastic saves, but he has been in there to miss them and he does get chances.
“I am delighted for him because they were two smart finishes that got us back in the game. Delighted for Dom but also delighted for everyone.”
Jordan Graham got a special mention too. His crosses led to the equaliser scored by Samuel and the winner that Vadaine Oliver headed home.
Raynor said: “The gaffer gave us a stat the other day about Jordan, that he is the best provider of chances in League 1, and he did it again, sticking it right on Vadaine’s head.
“It was a fantastic header and it gets us through to the next round.
“We have known about Vadaine’s threats for a number of years and if we can deliver that kind of service then he will get a lot of goals. It was a classic cross form a good winger and a good old fashioned header from a number nine.”
At 2-0 down, the Gills had to go for broke, which meant they were in danger of conceding more but Raynor was pleased that the defence managed to nullify the Woking threat.
He said: “I’m delighted for Vadaine but the boys at the back, especially second half, they concentrated and were solid to make sure we didn’t get hit on the break so I am delighted for them as well.”
