Justin Edinburgh believes Rory Donnelly can get among the goals by playing in the right areas.
The Gills boss has been pleased with Donnelly’s first season in League 1 and hopes a little tweak will get the goals flowing.
Edinburgh said: “It’s the first time he has played at this level and I am pleased with what he has contributed this season, with 10 league goals.
“He has maybe been a bit critical of himself of late, in the dressing room and behind closed doors.
“His work-rate is second to none and he is a fantastic team player but I have said to him of late he probably needs to do a bit more work in and around the 18-yard box.
“He is running here, there and everywhere and maybe he needs to channel that and get a little closer to Luke Norris, when he plays with him, and look to start getting back among the goals.”
Donnelly, 24, has seen his goals come in bursts this season. He went 10 games at the start of the campaign without netting but then hit a purple patch, netting six in four.
He then had a 11-game drought before bagging four in three games.
The Northern Ireland striker has now gone 10 games without a goal and Edinburgh is eager for one of his strikers to take the lead.
He said: “Luke has come into some goalscoring form (with three in six) and we are looking to Dom (Samuel) or Rory or even Cody (McDonald) for one of them to take up the baton and go on and bit of a spree between now and the end of the season.”
