Gills boss Justin Edinburgh felt Saturday’s match at Dover produced a mixed performance from his team.
The League 1 side struggled to put everything together, instead producing what Edinburgh described as “an indifferent performance” against National League Premier opposition.
Edinburgh, who was missing a trio of senior players through injury, said: “We started the game very well and took control but credit to Dover, they are a physically strong side and they really made a battle of it first half.
“In the second half we did better in terms of first and second balls so it was a little contrasting really.
“Overall, it has been a tough work-out against a well-organised and physical side who I am sure will do well in the Conference next year.”
The Gills started well enough, scoring inside two minutes through Brennan Dickenson, but their dominance faded once Ricky Miller levelled on 15.
“These games are realistic ones for us and they are competitive,” said the Gills boss.
“They raise their game and we have to be at it physically, which we were, certainly we were better second half.
“Brennan scored a good goal and we started really well, moving the ball well and looking a real threat, but after we gave the poor goal away it gave them incentive, which brought out the best in them and perhaps took us a little too long to overcome.
“We spoke at half time and I was pleased with the way we competed and won a lot more first and second balls but unfortunately never got our passing or attacking play going second half.”
The Gills were without Cody McDonald and Doug Loft once more, both suffering from injuries, while Jermaine McGlashan also sat the match out as a precaution, suffering with an Achilles injury.
All could be back in training, or playing, by the end of the coming week.
