Invicta Dynamos dominated rivals Chelmsford Chieftains last season - but that counts for nothing now.
Karl Lennon’s side host Chieftains this Sunday (5.45pm) in their only game of the weekend.
More: Super goals as the Mos return on home ice
The Mos beat their Essex rivals in the play-offs last term and the Southern Cup Final, while also winning all four league fixtures.
Only once in 10 meetings did the Chiefs claim a win, but under a new head coach for 2023/24, the Mos will be expecting a tougher challenge this time around.
Lennon said: “We obviously had a good series of games with them last year and to have only lost once against them was a tremendous effort from all of us but we are back to zero now, that doesn’t mean anything.
“Of course they will be wanting to settle scores because they won’t be happy about what happened last season, and for us now we have to take ourselves to the next level.
“They will be a good team, they have recruited exceptionally well over the summer. They have got a strong new coach as well, too, they will be better for that and we have to be better to get the result.
“It should be a well-attended game, we are rivals, we have played some big fixtures against each other. I am excited to get going and play that game and see what they are about because they will be a different proposition to what they were last season.
“For us it is trying to figure out what that will be.
“I am certain they will be stronger, they have picked up four or five players from the level above ours. We have also picked up a couple as well, we have our own confidence on that aspect, but what I would say is they have quality and combine that with some of the players that did perform well for them last year and of course they should be a better proposition.”
Dynamos opened their season with a 5-3 defeat at Solent Devils but hit back with a 7-3 victory at home to Romford Buccaneers.
Chelmsford started with a 5-1 win over Oxford City Stars, who have also recruited well over the summer. They have a two-game weekend, away to Romford on Saturday before heading to Planet Ice.
Lennon admits at this stage it’s still a bit of a guessing game, sussing out the opposition.
He said: “At this point of the season there is always that bit of unknown because you haven’t faced each other, you don’t quite know what everybody is capable of at this point.
“You can look at other results between each of the teams. We can look at their result against Oxford and them looking at our result with Romford and saying, well where does that stack us up?”
