Invicta Dynamos beat Oxford City Stars and Swindon Wildcats II as they finish fifth in the NIHL South Division 1 table – Karl Lennon’s side to face Solent Devils in the play-offs

Invicta Dynamos ended their regular season on a high after back-to-back victories.

The Mos completed their NIHL South Division 1 league fixtures with a 4-1 triumph over Oxford City Stars on Sunday after beating Swindon Wildcats 3-1 the day before. They’ll now meet Solent Devils over two legs next weekend (March 29-30) in a play-off quarter-final tie.

Head coach Karl Lennon said: “We were up against a decent Swindon team on Saturday and so to get a win against them and then on Sunday close it out and get the six points over the weekend was a really good end for us.

“The boys had a mission at the start of the weekend. It was mission 60, to get to 60 points, and we did that so we’re happy.”

The Mos can now go into the play-offs boosted by those wins, which came off the back of a victory the week before against Streatham.

“I didn't want us at any point to step down from that performance the week before,” said the coach.

“I don't think we played our best hockey against Streatham but we had that competitive spirit and nature that got us through and I felt like that was the case over the weekend as well.”

With senior netminder Brad Windebank nursing an injury, Lennon handed their 16-year-old netty Nikolai Divall starts in both games.

“It's pretty spectacular that he played two senior games in a weekend,” said the coach.

“That’s the first time to do that, starting both and then winning both and on top of that to have only conceded the two goals across the whole weekend was quite exceptional for such a young player.

“I was very happy for him and the boys also played in the right way for him, which was good, too.”

The Mos ended the regular season with a fifth-placed finish, with 18 wins and two more in overtime from their 36 games.

Reflecting on the mid-table finish, Lennon said: “I think it was a matter of ‘what if?’.

“We had moments where we felt like we were going to kick on and do better and generally speaking the team believed that we were more capable than where we finished this season.

“I think we've underachieved, honestly speaking, on what we would have hoped.

“Since Christmas we’ve had more wins than losses and we've had some really exciting games in all of that as well.”
