Invicta Dynamos host Chelmsford Chieftains on Sunday at Planet Ice, Gillingham after playing Streatham Redhawks away on Saturday – Karl Lennon’s side looking to bounce back from defeat to Solent Devils in NIHL South Division 1

Invicta Dynamos coach Karl Lennon will be hoping his side are switched on from the off this weekend after a slow start cost them last Sunday.

The Mos will need to be at their best when they travel to league leaders Streatham Redhawks on Saturday before hosting third-placed Chelmsford Chieftains 24 hours later.

Lennon’s side finished their last game strongly against Solent Devils, losing 3-2, but they were chasing from 3-0 down after what the coach described as being “static” on their return to the ice following the Christmas break.

Lennon said: “Two words are, ‘if only’, really, for me. We’ve had a few of those moments in recent times, especially against Solent.

“The previous time we played them at home, it was sort of ‘if only we could have seen the result out’ we’d have obviously picked up three points, but on top of that, we’d have made our way to a semi-final in the cup.

“On Sunday, it was, ‘if only we’d played in the first two periods’, then we might have got a comfortable win, because we were very dominant in the third.

“We were very static in the first two periods and that cost us massively.

“We were three down and with a mountain to climb against a team that’s quite technical and quite tactical.”

The Mos got back into the game with goals from Danny Scott and James Laming and were pushing to take the match into overtime. They pulled their netminder but just couldn’t find the third goal they needed.

Lennon said: “I was obviously happy with a reaction but it shouldn’t always need to be a reaction. It should be that we can start positively.

“We just weren’t making the right decisions. We’d started to make good decisions before Christmas and we just went back to making bad decisions.

“I think of all the teams in the division, they’re the one team that’s very regimented in how they operate a game plan and that’s credit to Alex [Murray], their coach. He’s very much structure over individuality.

“I’d like to think we try and find a balance between the two. I think you need that. In the third period where we have our individuality coming through and expressing itself, we managed to get a couple of goals.

“As a coach, I want to create a structure for us to work within. We try to do that, and we address the threats that the opposition proposed to us but we don’t always act on those insights.”

Looking ahead to this week’s challenge, Lennon knows it will be tough - but he’s confident his side can give anyone a run for their money.

He said: “As a hockey player, I only ever wanted to play in the big games. We’ve got two massive ones this weekend.

“Both sides have had the better of us in the meetings that we’ve had this season. I think against both of those teams, we’ve had games where we’ve had good spells, but we haven’t been consistent for three periods.

“They also haven’t had consistently three solid good periods against us as well.

“We need to take some confidence from the periods that we’ve had that have been good, spread those across the six that we have this weekend and make sure we get something out of it.

“Before Christmas we went against Slough and I don’t think anyone really fancied us. I knew that we were capable, and I think we just have to take that with us, build on it and make sure that we’re ready to go Saturday and Sunday.”

Harrison Lillis has made a welcome return back for the Mos after a long-term injury while Ruskin Springer-Hughes was back last weekend after hand surgery.

Louis Colvin will be available again, missing Sunday’s match due to travel issues while returning from overseas.
