Gillingham went through the opening month of the league season unbeaten – and manager Justin Edinburgh says this is just the beginning.
His young team have surprised the best sides in League 1 already and face former Championship outfit Doncaster on Saturday at Priestfield.
The Gills have already beaten two of the League 1 title favourites – Sheffield United and Wigan – at home this season.
Edinburgh said: “What we can’t underestimate is that we brought nine players into the group in the summer and are still bedding them in. We aren’t the finished article and it will be a couple of years on before we will be.
“The age of the group tells you that they are nowhere near their peak. It is exciting times for the club.”
Edinburgh’s side have already topped League 1 during August and head into this weekend sitting fourth.
He added: “We have had one month of a 10-month season so what we have to try and do is get consistency through these next nine months now. There will be some off moments but we have to overcome those quickly and get back on track."
“August has been fantastic and the players deserve all the credit they have got. They have earned everything through the desire, work rate and the way they have played the games. They are a joy to work with and that is what we want to continue.”
Aaron Morris is still a week away from recovering from injury and Gills’ squad is likely to be unchanged for this weekend’s match. Left-back Bradley Garmston (calf) is the only one pushing for a return.
