Gillingham’s game against Millwall on Sunday is a must-win but even that may not be enough.
Justin Edinburgh’s side are two places outside the play-offs heading into their final match of the season at Priestfield.
Not only do they have to take maximum points, they also have to hope promotion rivals Barnsley and Scunthorpe both fail to win.
If all three results come in, then the Gills will claim the final play-off spot and a chance to fight for a place in the Championship.
The manager is sure his boys can do it. Edinburgh said: “It is clear what we need – there is just one result that is required. I know we won’t come up short in terms of application and preparation and desire and effort.
“We are not a team that makes excuses, we never have been. They will have given everything they have and I believe we will win and then we’re reliant on others.”
The Gills have slipped off the pace in recent weeks, falling to eighth place after last week’s defeat at Burton, leaving them clinging on after a season of over-achievement.
Edinburgh said: “They haven’t shirked the challenge. There are fine margins in games and there have been some real fine ones in these last few weeks."
Gillingham are assessing injuries to Aaron Morris (knee), Bradley Garmston, Andrew Crofts and Adam El-Abd (all hamstring) ahead of Sunday’s big match.
