Gillingham boss Justin Edinburgh intends to keep agent fees to a minimum.

Figures released this week showed Gills paid £27,125 to agents between October 2014 and September 2015 – the eighth lowest total in League 1.

Edinburgh believes they have a role to play in football but feels Gills are right to keep payments low.

The former Newport boss, who took charge at Priestfield in February, said: “Whether we like it or not, agents have a part to play in the game and the good majority of them have cleaned their act up and conduct themselves correctly and honestly.

“More often than not, the ones I come across are decent, look after their clients correctly and advise them in the right way.

“We don’t want to see too much money going out of the game because we need it to be kept in football and making sure it filters down to the grass roots.

“We haven’t spent a lot of money and that’s right. There’s enough good players out there that we shouldn’t be having to pay agents’ fees to come to this football club.

“There’s going to be a few that we have had to do but on the whole you don’t want to be paying too much.”
