Manager Steve Evans says he doesn’t care what other people think of the way his Gillingham team play.
The Gills have been picking points up against some of League 1’s top sides in recent weeks and it’s led to fans and managers of those clubs questioning the way Evans’ men play the game.
It may be direct, which is not unusual for a lower-league team, and Evans makes no apologies about playing football in a way that gets results.
“I don’t care what others think,” he said, having taken criticism off the likes of Lincoln City (who they beat 3-0).
“We have to set out our strategy. We looked at the resources that the chairman made available in the summer and we had a strategy to sign a squad to play a way where we could be effective in League 1.
“I don’t hear many people talk about other teams in the league, who play the same as we play, but most managers are goody-two-shoes, they’ve never won a promotion and they are never likely to win a promotion despite big resources.
“When I was at Leeds in the Championship I listened carefully to the words of (Burnley manager) Sean Dyche when he said you have to find a way to win and get results, and we are finding a way.
“We have some real talented players, we have players who are so committed and I am proud of every one of them.
“We have 14-15 players delivering this campaign that we are in, we don’t have seven sitting at home and we struggle some weeks to find players to fill the bench. If we didn’t have Dominic Samuel on Saturday (back from injury sooner than expected) then we wouldn’t have made the bench up.
“We will continue to work hard on the training ground, we know we have a difficult game against Wigan on Wednesday, who drew against Ipswich Town on Saturday, and that is no mean feat. It tells you how tough our challenge will be on Wednesday.”
