Gillingham are taking a look at Hearts midfielder Olly Lee.
The 28-year-old played 41 games for the SPL last season but has been made available by their manager Craig Levein.
Gills boss Steve Evans is keen to tie up a deal in the next 24 hours for the player to bolster his midfield and watched him play in a practice match on Tuesday.
“He was a top player at Luton and a top player at Hearts last season,” said the Gills manager.
“He needs some minutes. Watching some of his touches and his passing, he has been a joy to watch.
“We are trying but we are not quite there yet.”
Lee was with the Gills during a brief spell earlier on in his career, playing seven games on loan from West Ham in the 2011/12 season.
He played for Barnet before joining Birmingham City. He went onto have a couple of loan stints at Plymouth and eventually signed permanently for Luton Town three years ago.
Two seasons with the Hatters saw him help them to promotion, playing regularly there before moving to Hearts on a three year deal in the summer of 2018.
Gillingham aren’t the only club interested but Evans is hopeful.
He said: “I have a brilliant relationship with their manager Craig Levein, all my career, and vice versa.
“We spoke very quickly on the phone and he was happy for us to look at him for a couple of days and he can have a look at us. Olly has three or four options in League 1.
“He is not our only option but he is obviously the option we’ve run with. We just need to balance the squad a little bit.”
