Gillingham chairman Paul Scally calls for unity among supporters

Chairman Paul Scally believes that Gillingham will be stronger if everyone sticks together.

A run of bad results during the autumn months led to plenty of heated debate among supporters, with some calling for the manager to be sacked.

Mr Scally stuck by Justin Edinburgh and with three league wins during November the Gills are still close enough to the play-offs to mount a promotion challenge in 2017.

The Gills chairman said: “We have got tremendous fans, home and away, but there are occasions where a small minority turn viciously against the team and/or the management and that is not really helpful or healthy.

“Those are the fans I want to reach out to and try and persuade (them) to stick with the team.

“It is a team effort. It is not just about the 11 on the pitch and the manager, it is a whole team effort – it is everyone.

“Everyone who supports the club has to take their responsibility. We are together. If things go bad, we are in it together and if things aren’t working on the pitch we are in it together, and that is quite important.”

Mr Scally believes the Gills squad is as good as anything that has been assembled before.

He said: “We have a tremendous squad, one of the best we have had on paper, possibly in all time, in terms of individuals and their capabilities.

“Not being able to have a consistent team makes it difficult for the manager, because of injuries and other reasons. Now, he is starting to put out the same, or similar, team every week.

“The players are trying 100%, there is not a lazy player in the squad and there is not a player who hasn’t got the ability to put on the shirt in the squad.

“Every player at the club has the ability and capability and desire to put on the shirt.

“Whether that translates to a good performance or not, is just a million dollar question and why we all love football, it’s unpredictable.”
