Former Gillingham defender Andy Frampton has retired from the game after an injury-plagued season at AFC Wimbledon.

The 35-year-old centre-back - who skippered Gills during 58 appearances through 2011/12 and 2012/13 - has not played since November and underwent surgery on a long-standing ankle injury in January.

Frampton told the Wimbledon website: "I am gutted, but it is a decision I have made with my family and I believe it is the right time.

"Not so long ago I did a session on my own as part of my rehabilitation. It was not a particularly heavy session but for three days afterwards I had a bad reaction."

Frampton came through the youth ranks at Crystal Palace, making 29 appearances between 1998 and 2002.

He moved to Brentford where he spent five years and made more than 120 appearances, with another 88 coming in four years at Millwall before his switch to Gillingham in July 2011.

He added: "I was not the most skilful player or the quickest, but I played with my heart and every challenge and every pass meant the world to me.

"It has been a privilege to be one of those people lucky enough to have played football for a living."
