Gillingham manager Mark Bonner looks ahead to their midweek League 2 match against Bromley at Hayes Lane

Gillingham manager Mark Bonner hopes their away support helps drive them on at Bromley tonight.

The Gills have sold out their ticket allocation at Hayes Lane for Wednesday night’s League 2 clash in what will be the first meeting between the sides in the Football League.

It means the Gills will have 515 supporters cheering them on from the seats in the North Stand and the East Terrace. It’s likely they’ll have fans elsewhere for an away fixture that’s within easy reach.

The club will be showing the game live from the Factory Bar at Priestfield, with doors open for over-18s from 6pm.

Those at the match will have a part to play with manager Mark Bonner saying: “We're looking forward to it and hopefully there'll be an atmosphere that will really drive the players and we can get back on a winning run.

“Us selling out our tickets was a given, really. We could have sold out a few times with the amount of demand for people who wanted to come and watch it.

“Hopefully those that are there make a right noise and get right behind the team, and the team can give a performance that gives us a real chance of winning the game.

“I think it'll be an exciting game, just because it's a real local derby. We've had a big derby with the Swindon game, but this is more of a traditional derby.

“I think the location of the game always adds an edge to the game, which is really good. Having been there before to see games, knowing what the atmosphere will be like, how tight it will be, I think it'll be a really lively atmosphere, which will be brilliant.

“Those games are great because the atmosphere looks after itself. There's always a bit more edge and intensity to the game. They had a brilliant season last season and they're equipping themselves well to the league.”

Bromley won promotion from the National League last season through the play-offs, beating Solihull Moors in the final to win their place in the EFL.

Andy Woodman’s side have struggled for wins this season in League 2, with just three so far, but they’ve been hard to beat, drawing half of their 16 games.

Their last four League 2 matches have been drawn but they beat Solihull in the FA Cup second round on Sunday to set up a third-round clash away against Newcastle United.

For the Gills, they had a weekend off after losing out in the first round of the FA Cup. They go into the game looking to raise some cheer after a disappointing home loss to Harrogate when they last played.

Bonner said: “It's a big game for supporters, it's a big game because it's a derby and the first one in a long period of time. But the reality is, all that aside, it's just a really big game for us off the back of the last one and ahead of a run of games that we need to get points out of and get back to winning games regularly.

“It will be one that you've got to be up for, you've got to be tough, you've got to be strong, you've got to have personality, you've got to make sure that you fight for control of the game. That's what we have to do.

“It's a big week for us to try and keep attached to the clubs up above us and make sure that when the year turns, we're in a healthy position.”

The Gills follow up Wednesday’s game with a home clash against Salford City on Saturday.
