Gillingham started pre-season with a 1-0 win at Bostik South Faversham Town on Friday night.
Summer signing Tom Eaves scored his first Gills goal to give Adrian Pennock’s side a half-time lead.
The visitors changed all 11 players at half-time but there were no more goals.
Eaves, who’s signed from Yeovil, sidefooted home in the 22nd minute after Mark Byrne released Scott Wagstaff up the right.
He could easily have had four goals, heading over crosses from Lee Martin and Wagstaff when well placed, while Town keeper Simon Overland made an outstanding one-handed save.
Overland was also alert to block from Greg Cundle, who’d been played in by one of three unnamed first-half trialists, and he pulled off another good save when Martin went through.
Gills looked pretty comfortable as the half wore on, having survived a couple of early scares.
Tomas Holy made a flying save from Sam Bewick’s fine strike from 20 yards and the same man thought he’d scored with a shot that bounced down off the underside of the bar.
Gills’ second-half XI included one more trialist - also unnamed.
The visitors almost went two up in the early stages, Town defender Dan Carrington heading against his own bar.
Overland, who’s rejoined Faversham from Sittingbourne, did well to turn over a Jake Hessenthaler shot with 15 minutes left.
Faversham threatened with a deflected strike following a loose pass from Stuart Nelson, with Bradley Garmston clearing off the line from the corner.
Nelson was off his line sharply to deny Freeman Rogers a late equaliser as the home side finished well.
