It’s all about the fitness, insists Gills boss Just Edinburgh, after his side beat Concord Rangers on Tuesday night.
The Gills struck twice in the second half to win the game 2-1, having conceded from a corner in the second half.
Edinburgh said: “We are looking to go through the gears now. It is mainly about fitness and attitude and playing in a different environment against a team who were always going to be difficult to break down.
“We moved the ball on a dry pitch quite well but the final cross or pass wasn’t quite there but in terms of effort and application, I was delighted with the players.”
Edinburgh gave most of his first team squad a run-out, along with a handful of trialists.
The manager said: “We played two different teams in the game in France, we mixed it again and we will also do that against Billericay (on Wednesday night).
“Then, as the minutes get into the players legs and the fitness side is there, you look for your systems and combinations and the partnerships and your team.
“You have an eye on who is linking up and who looks like they are on the same wavelength, but most importantly it was about minutes in legs and making sure it is competitive.”
Gillingham’s lack of numbers meant midfielder Emmanuel Osadebe played centre-back and Edinburgh was impressed with his showing.
“He looked comfortable and assured,” said the manager.
“We are looking at all options and permutations and we will see where it takes us.
“Paddy played there in his younger days. It is something he is comfortable at. He just wants to play football and that showed in his performance.”
