Olly Lee is the latest Gillingham player facing weeks on the sidelines as the club are awaiting news of the severity of Stuart O’Keefe’s injury.
O’Keefe picked up a hamstring strain on Saturday in the draw against Accrington Stanley. Lee was missing from the weekend fixture with a broken toe which he suffered in Tuesday night's EFL Trophy match.
Gillingham have endured injury misery all season with Dan Phillips, David Tutonda and Alex MacDonald currently fighting their way back to fitness. Lee and now O’Keefe are also in the treatment room.
Lee picked up his fracture early on against West Ham's youngsters in the EFL Trophy match and lasted the 90 minutes before revealing his injury.
“He is out for six weeks with a broken toe,” Evans said.
“I could hear the whispers behind me (on Saturday) about what is happening with Olly Lee when I am on the bench. Do they think we don’t want him to be picked?
“He is a good player. He has not had a good spell yet this season but he is a top player, maybe I should have said to him, ‘your foot is the size of my head but play son’. It’s not an option is it?
“He got it in the first 10 minutes of the game against West Ham. That is what we talk about in people trying to prove a point. He didn’t have a good game by his own admission but he has the heart the size of Big Ben. He wanted to stay on the pitch and prove a point.
“When I saw his foot afterwards I am saying, ‘Olly, why didn’t you let us know?’ He said ‘because Gaffer I wanted to play on Saturday' and that is what we have got in the dressing room.”
