Gabriel Zakuani has undergone a scan to reassess an injury he picked up last season.
The defender was injured in February after a fall following a challenge with Barnsley’s Keiffer Moore.
It left him sidelined for the rest of the campaign but he was confident of making it back for pre-season, fit and healthy.
Boss Steve Evans is keen to see the results of the scan, after Zakuani complained of feeling discomfort in the ankle.
“He is making good progress and it’s not a setback,” Evans said.
“The timing scale for him was to be back fully training in mid-July, so Gary (Hemens, the physio) has got him on schedule but I think he might have wanted him a week or two ahead of schedule.
“He’s felt it a bit on landing with some of the testing we’ve done. If the MRI doesn’t show something then maybe it is just something he has to work through.”
The Gills strengthened their defensive options this week with the arrival of Southampton defender Alfie Jones.
Evans, meanwhile, has confirmed that young defender Aaron Simpson has left the club.
The 20-year-old departs after making five first team appearances, all of which came in the Checkatrade Trophy.
The Gills boss said: “We wanted Aaron to stay a while, he felt that he hadn’t been given a fair crack last year, I can’t speak on that, but that is what he felt and he wants to move on to different things.”
Simpson was offered a new deal this summer so the Gills would be due compensation if he moves elsewhere.
