Scottish midfielder Danny Galbraith is determined to make the most of his lucky break with the Gills.
The 24-year-old spent several months looking for a club in England but his chance came when a cousin started attending a soccer school being run by former Gills player Adam Barrett.
Barrett, who runs an academy in Essex, was on loan at AFC Wimbledon at the time and his call to former boss Peter Taylor led to a trial. Galbraith hasn’t looked back.
He said: “I have had agents talking here, there and everywhere. It got me nowhere but one call from Adam Barrett to the manager here and I got a trial.
“I didn’t even know Adam but I owe a lot to him now. He put a word in for me, after meeting my auntie and uncle, and I was grateful to have been given the opportunity."
Galbraith’s journey to Gillingham has been an eventful one, starting in the youth team at Hearts before moving to Manchester United and playing in the same junior team as both Danny Welbeck and Tom Cleverley.
He went on to play for Hibernian and League of Ireland side Limerick. He arrived at the Gills in December, but even that wasn’t straightforward after Taylor's sacking.
“I was only in the door for five minutes and it was all change," Galbraith said.
"I was the newcomer, in amongst a squad of players who the coaches that came in were familiar with, so I tried to keep my head down and worked as hard as I could so when I did get a chance I was ready to take it.”
