Weekend goalscorer Dom Jefferies is loving the buzz that’s been generated by Gillingham’s new owners.

Jefferies got his first goal in professional football on Saturday, the Gills ended a 12-game winless run and the team managed more than one league goal in a game for the first time in nine months.

The Gills went into the weekend sitting bottom of League 2 but the takeover by Brad and Shannon Galinson has changed everything.

“They have brought a positive energy to everyone,” said the 20-year-old, having scored the second in 2-0 win over Hartlepool.

“The gaffer is buzzing, the players are buzzing, the people who are coming in are happy to be here. We haven’t had the results we want but it’s still a really good place to be around, we can enjoy training and games and I think the results will start to fall into place now we have all this.

“The fans have been brilliant, following us up and down the country, even when results haven’t gone our way. They deserved that, giving them something to celebrate, we can build on this and hopefully pick up some results.

“With high quality players coming in the training standards, the games, everything just rises a bit and we can build. I will watch Tom (Nichols) and whoever else comes in, I can bring that to my game, it gives a boost for everyone. It is healthy competition and we need that.”

Jefferies took his goal well, scoring his first in 24 appearances.

He said: “All week I had been thinking that I want to score, I missed a few (in previous games) that I should have scored, everyone in the building is buzzing, confidence in training, the energy of everyone gives you a boost.

“I like to run up and down the pitch, that is an attribute I have, being only 20 years old with loads of energy.

“The ball came to me. I was thinking, ‘I am shooting and it’s going in!’ That is all I thought. Someone was to my right, I could hear a little voice, but I thought, ‘nah, I’m shooting!’

“It was hit and hope really, but it’s gone into the top corner. It’s unreal. The start we’ve had, to get the three points is something we can build on now.”

Now the Gills have quality in the squad which should enable them to pull clear of trouble in League 2 before attacking the top end next season. That’s the plan.

Jefferies said: “No hiding it, we haven’t been good enough until now. Something wasn’t clicking, maybe with the new boys coming in has given us that boost. Tom, Oli, Tim and Glenn were brilliant, we worked together and got the result.

“Everyone is happy around the training ground, we just need to build on from there now.

“If felt like we were more of a team (on Saturday), a team performance and we got the result we deserved. All the boys were brilliant, we worked for each other.

“Standards in training have gone up, levels have gone higher, everyone seems more like a team with all this positivity around the club. It is good positive vibes around the club, a good place to be.”
