Gillingham added a couple of forwards to their squad last week but more are needed.
Manager Neil Harris added Jordan Green and Mikael Mandron last week but wants additional options before the season gets under way.
Mandron was a key summer signing for Harris, who was always keen to add a big man up top, but he confirmed he’s not content with just one.
He said: “We need someone else to come into that forward line, we have got Mika, we have got Scott Kashket and we have Ben Reeves.
“Obviously Olly Lee can play advanced as well. We have seen a couple of lovely touches from him, he is a goal threat but we do need a couple more players in that forward line, one certainly a centre-forward and probably a wide player as well.”
Gillingham have 15 senior outfield players contracted so far after a busy summer rebuild for manager Harris. It’s likely that four or five more faces will join before the transfer window closes at the end of August.
“We still lack a few more and probably lack a couple who will come straight into the starting eleven and it is my job to go and get those over the line,” added the Gills boss.
Gillingham have been linked with numerous forwards in recent weeks, including Millwall youngster Isaac Olaofe, free agent Tom Elliott and Peterborough's Spanish-born prospect Kai Corbett.
Talks are ongoing, meanwhile, over the state of play with loan goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer.
The Charlton loanee has been ruled out with a shoulder injury until Christmas just weeks after the Gills signed him for the season, a deal which included a break clause for the League 1 side.
Gillingham will be hoping it’s not money wasted.
Harris said: “Talks are taking place behind the scenes at the moment but we signed the player in good faith, the player came in good faith and Charlton loaned him in good faith, that is the way it is and it is really unfortunate when you get any player in, especially when it is a tight group, when any player breaks down so early.”
Harris wants another keeper to compete with former Newcastle stopper Jake Turner. He played 90 minutes against Portsmouth on Saturday as youth keeper Taite Holtman sat on the bench in reserve.
On the keeper situation, Harris said: “Jake has done brilliant, he looks like he is going to be a super goalkeeper as he develops.
“We felt we had the best pair we could have possibly put together but we’ve lost Ash and we need to find another to pair up with Jake that can push each other.
“There are good goalkeepers out there, it is just making sure we can attract the right ones.
“Of course there are constraints because financially we have signed two goalkeepers already and we have to find another one. We have to make sure we try and get the right goalkeeper for us but with the right club for the goalkeeper as well.”
