Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence will have one eye on next season when he picks his team to play Doncaster this Saturday.
The Gills have already blown their play-off hopes and the weekend game will now give Clemence the opportunity to try out different things in a League 2 match situation.
“I will look at one or two things for going forward,” he said, ahead of their final game.
“I would want to see one or two things now rather than wait for pre-season and there might be something that looks different to what you’ve seen in the past.
“There could be some involvement there from the youngsters as well but I still want to win the game, that is the most important thing, and I will be picking a team that can do that.
“There are a lot of people that have paid a lot of money to come and watch the team every week and every time you go onto the pitch you have a duty to give your all for the football club and the players will do that at the weekend.
“We want to finish as high in the table as we can, and try and take a bit of momentum forward into next season.
“There have been some positives lately where we’ve played two teams who are above us in the league and managed to score four goals in the last two. I am hoping we can bring some of that in the weekend.”
Clemence’s men saw their play-off hopes ended at Mansfield Town last weekend and some of his players picked up knocks in that match.
He won’t be taking risks on anyone, particularly big striker Josh Andrews, who he says has a busy summer ahead following recent time out injured.
Clemence said: “Josh Andrews had a few whacks and he also had a dead calf from the week before against Barrow and he got kicked on it again.
“He was struggling in that second half and he obviously hasn’t played a lot of football. The last thing I want him to do is pull a hamstring or a thigh and be out for two or three months.
“I know people will say it doesn’t matter, it’s the summer, but you don’t want to do that to a player.
“He won’t be having eight or nine weeks off in the summer, he needs to continue his fitness programme to come back in the best shape possible and you don’t want to injure a player.”
Clemence was also forced into taking Jonny Williams off at Mansfield after being on the receiving end of a number of kicks.
Goalkeeper Jake Turner - who recently claimed his no.1 place back from Glenn Morris - took a heavy whack in training this week but Clemence says he should be okay.
Midfielder George Lapslie returned to full training on Thursday after injury kept him out of facing his old team Mansfield last weekend.
