Gillingham could put pressure on the League 1 big boys with victory over Wigan Athletic

Gillingham know a midweek win over Wigan Athletic would catapult them into the play-off places and put the pressure on those around them.

The Gills’ game against relegation-threatened Wigan is the only match in League 1 tomorrow (Wednesday) and they head into that game sitting two points adrift of the top six.

Manager Steve Evans and his players have got fans dreaming of a play-off challenge but reaching them remains an outside bet.

Evans knows Wednesday’s game - moved from Good Friday - will be tough but would love to be muscling in on a group of teams whose expectation levels are much greater. The rest of League 1 play their games as scheduled on Friday.

“It would make Friday interesting,” said Evans. “All those teams on big budgets, squeaky bum times, those managers who say ‘we can’t get beaten by them.’ They haven’t done so well since we beat them.

“We will see what we can achieve at Priestfield. It will be interesting if we win, interesting how people cope on Friday if we’ve won on the Wednesday.

“We are there with eight (games) to go and we have to be there with six to go and within six points. We play on Wednesday and then (on Easter Monday) we have to go up to Blackpool who are in great form.

“It’s another long trip, we seem to have saved up all the long trips for the same time, but our boys are impeccably fresh, there is a real buzz about them and that is not always the case, sometimes there can be no buzz, it is frightening when some people don’t want to work hard.

“But we have to get them off the training ground, we have to drag them in sometimes, the likes of Graham, Dempsey, Lee, Oliver, we have to drag them in and make sure we save them for matches.

“We have found a group of lads who really care, some special talented players and whether it’s next season or the season after they will be playing in the Championship, some real special talents.

“If we can keep them focused, keep them fresh and working hard, keep reminding them of what the prize might be.

“When it all levels out, wow, wouldn’t it be interesting if we can get in that mix, or four or five points off it with four games to go, all those big budget teams with managers not being able to sleep.”
