Gillingham close in on League 1 play-off places after victory at Lincoln City

Gillingham moved to within two points on the League 1 play-off places after victory at Lincoln but manager Steve Evans isn’t getting carried away.

The Gills have won four of their last five games and are edging ever closer to the top six - and a chance for promotion.

In recent weeks they have outplayed play-off chasing Portsmouth, beaten big-guns Ipswich Town and on Tuesday night clinched a 3-0 win over third-placed Lincoln.

Evans said: “It is an opportunity to dream but it is our job to remain focused, get back on the training ground and work hard. I have been over the course many times with promotions. It is the ones who think they have won promotion with 10 or 11 games to go and that is when you get tripped up.

“We only need to remind ourselves of how we felt coming home from Fleetwood and only two weeks before that we lost to Wimbledon after absolute domination in the second half.

“We won’t be getting carried away, we won’t be talking about anything. The play-offs are still a big stretch for us. That would be unbelievable, the lowest budget in League 1 gets in the play-offs, it would be unbelievable.”

Evans has picked his players wisely this season with free transfer signings such as Vadaine Oliver and Kyle Dempsey.

He said: “As much as money is tight for our chairman he has never let any of us down.

“I never thought the resources would be as tight as they are, certainly when I came in I thought there would be more, but a pandemic strikes and what happens? As a manager you have to be there for the chairman and the football club, and supporters.

“We have taken cars to games, we had the discussion about going to Lincoln by car but I made a decision, it was a little too far. We are only doing that to save the club some money, simple. Other managers phone me up and say, ‘what are you doing?’

“We are doing what we need to do to make sure our football club is here next season for when the most important people, the supporters, are back at Priestfield.

Report: Lincoln 0 Gillingham 3

Reaction: 'We could have won by more'
