Gillingham defender Conor Masterson reacts to their 2-2 draw against Cheltenham Town at Priestfield in League 2

There were more positives than negatives for Gillingham defender Conor Masterson after Friday night’s draw.

The Gills squandered a lead against Cheltenham Town and were trailing 2-1 before equalising to take a point from the match that ended two apiece.

Masterson said: “We're frustrated but I think there are more positives than negatives to take out of that game.

“In the first 45 we were excellent. We could have scored more.

“I think that's the best we've played with the ball in a while, if I'm honest. We were controlling the game completely.

“They scored a worldie (to make it 1-1). Sometimes you just have to hold your hands up.

“In the second half, obviously we go behind. It's an annoying goal for us. We don't usually concede them type of goals as a team. But then, it shows, in the past where we lose that game 2-1, we come back and we get a point.

“We have loads of chances and we're just frustrated we didn't finish them off. But I think, as you can see, the momentum is building now. Two wins, a draw, going into the Christmas period. I think we're getting better.”

The Gills came so close to winning it when Bradley Dack’s stoppage time effort came off the crossbar.

Masterson said: “I was right behind and I thought it was going in. I literally thought it was just going to drop in.

“I think the place would have erupted because, obviously, Brad's a Gillingham boy. It would have been nice.

“You just have to take the positives and move on to Colchester.”

The Gills head to Colchester on Boxing Day ater collecting seven points from their last three games and sitting just shy of the play-off places in League 2.

“The confidence is building,” said the defender.

“The momentum is building. Okay, we didn't get three points [against Cheltenham] but it's another point.

“We keep picking up points now. Injuries are coming back and it just feels like the team is really coming together.

“We're a good team but we want to be a brilliant team and we're not far off that. We just want to keep pushing and pushing and pushing.

“We've got that momentum of seven (points) in three games so we want to keep that going.”
