Gillingham have cancelled the contract of defender Rhys Bennett and he’s joined another team in League 1.
Bennett, 30, heads north after agreeing a deal with one of Gillingham’s relegation rivals Morecambe. Both clubs are in a battle for survival.
Summer signing Bennett played 17 league games for the Gills. He has signed a contract with Morecambe that runs until the end of the season.
He tweeted: "Just want to wish the Gills all the best for the future! Thank you for the time I had there, met some great people!"
Their manager Stephen Robinson said: “I am pleased to get Rhys over the line, he is someone that I have had an eye on throughout the season and we have worked hard to secure his signature.
“He is very experienced at this level and was part of a cup winning side during his time in Scotland.
“Rhys gives us another option in defence, he is a tall, powerful defender that puts his body on the line when needed and I am sure the fans will be looking forward to seeing him in action.”
Gillingham could come up against Bennett when they head to Morecambe on February 12.
The announcement of Bennett's departure comes just shortly after news of a loan signing from QPR. Conor Masterson has joined for the remainder of the season.
