Gillingham loan forward Aiden O’Brien is set to miss the remaining games of the season through injury.
The 29-year-old joined the Gills from Shrewsbury in January and he went onto make 14 appearances - half of those off the bench. A hamstring injury now means he’ll miss the last three matches of the campaign.
It’s a blow to the player who has enjoyed his time at the club, scoring on his last appearance, a 2-1 defeat at Northampton.
Manager Neil Harris confirmed the injury will keep him sidelined but the player will continue to train with the Gills.
“He is injured and unfortunately his season is finished, hamstring. It would have been touch and go whether he would have got back for the last game (at Salford on May 8) but at this stage of the season we’re not going to take that risk.
“He has a standard hamstring, four to six week job, and the Salford game would fall ono that four week period but there will be no risk with Aiden and so unfortunately we won’t see him again this season.
“He stays with us for rehab, we love having him here, Shrewsbury are doing their own thing at the moment, he lives within 25 minutes of here so it ticks all the boxes. He is welcome to stay with us as long as he needs to, to rehab, because he is technically our player until the end of May, June time.”
O’Brien tweeted: “Really, really enjoyed my time at the club. You’ve all welcomed me with open arms and I’ve loved every minute. Big things to happen next year - I believe in this team and everyone else involved!”
The Gills boss has worked with the player previously at Millwall and jumped at the chance to bring him back in January.
“He is a top character, done really well for us,” the Gills boss added.
As he’s still contracted to Shrewsbury, Harris wouldn’t comment on any future plans for the player and the possibility of him joining the club full-time in the summer.
O’Brien finished with two goals for the Gills, scoring with his first touch at Northampton and netting the winner against Crewe at Priestfield a month ago.
He started the season with Shrewsbury, joining them in the summer following a season with Portsmouth and two at Sunderland . He’s best remembered for his time at Millwall, where he played close to 200 league games.
Young midfielder Josh Chambers, meanwhile, has been recalled from his loan spell at Worthing.
The 19-year-old has spent most of the season with the National South side who have three games left before an expected play-off campaign.
