Returning midfielder Ethan Coleman knows Gillingham need to become more ruthless.

Another victory for the Gills on Saturday leaves them top of League 2, with the goals in the 2-1 win coming in the opening 25 minutes, but Coleman knows they can do more.

Coleman, back after suspension, said: “I enjoyed it, I was buzzing with the win, a lot of things to work on again but the performance was really good.

“First half we kept the ball well and created a lot of chances, second half didn’t quite go for it, we could have gone for the throat a bit more but it was good.”

Coleman nodded a corner into the path of George Lapslie for Gillingham’s first goal and played in Connor Mahoney for the second.

The Gills completed the final 15 minutes with an extra man after Morecambe’s striker Michael Mellon was sent off.

“As soon as the red card happened we were more or less comfortable,” said Coleman.

“At that point, when we have been one goal ahead in the last few games and stuff, over the season, we haven’t really gone for it, but we will get better at that.

“We have to kill off teams better, be more ruthless.”

Gillingham created plenty on Saturday and Coleman was in the thick of it. The young midfielder was picked to play alongside Shaun Williams in midfield.

Williams is 13 years older than Coleman and the younger man has enjoyed learning from the captain.

Coleman said: “Willo is a massive help. He talks me through the game and it is massive to learn off that as a player. I’ve really enjoy playing next to him, he’s a great player.

“Last season, when I came in in January, that was the time I wasn’t so much involved in playing and I was really watching him, how he performed and played and what the gaffer likes in that position, that is what I have tried to do.”

Manager Neil Harris put Coleman straight into the starting XI on Saturday after a three-match EFL league and cup ban, a frustrating period, although he did benefit from being allowed to play in the EFL Trophy match against his former team Leyton Orient.

“It was really tough,” he said. “You don’t like sitting on the sidelines watching, when you’re not injured and you can play and for me, I didn’t think it was a red card in the first place, it is really pleasing to come back on the pitch and more importantly we won.”

With two assists, the sponsors’ man-of-the-match and another win, it was a pleasing return.

“It was very enjoyable,” said the 23-year-old. “I think that was one of the best performances from us in possession, we created a lot of chances, the fans were behind us, really good.

“We moved the ball well, as soon as they got their red card in the second half, again we managed the game well and could have come down on their throats a bit more, but we will improve on that.”
