Gillingham’s promising pre-season campaign continued with a win at Priestfield on Tuesday night against Patro Eisden.
The Gills came from a goal down to lead at the break thanks to set-piece specialist Darren Oldaker. He scored one and assisted Josh Wright for the second.
Tottenham loan defender Connor Ogolvie made it 3-1 in the second half and Noel Mbo headed in a fourth.
The Gills, playing a different XI in each half, were up against Belgian third-tier side Patro Eisden but it proved to be a tough contest, despite the scoreline.
Patro had an away following of one, according to the Gills announcer, although their support in the second half made it sound like at least five. They named a ‘Steve’ and a ‘Dean’ in their line-up and included striker Maxime Cosse, who had a trial with the Gills earlier in pre-season.
Gills were brightest early on. Liam Nash side-footed a great chance wide but it was the visitors who took the lead, scoring through Georgios Tsirlidis. He latched into a ball over the top and fired home with a shot too powerful for Tomas Holy to keep out.
Holy had moments earlier got away with a pass to Cosse. He was unable to make the most of the chance, however. At the other end Josh Wright headed a deep cross onto the bar.
The Gills were a little too casual at times in the opening half. Oldaker had almost been punished midway through by Cosse, who won possession but failed to find the target with the shot.
The young Gills midfielder soon perked up, however, finding Josh Parker with an exquisite crossfield ball moments later and then getting the Gills back on level terms.
His 39 minute free-kick from 25 yards squirmed under keeper Oguzhan Demirci. Luke O’Neill was infront of the keeper as the ball went in but it was Oldaker who took the congratulations.
Four minutes later and the Gills were ahead. Oldaker was again the man to unlock the defence, squaring a free-kick to Wright and he fired home.
Gills continued with their 3-5-2 formation in the second half, taking charge from the restart and looking better on the ball. With an hour gone they added a third. Mbo rose well to meet a Scott Wagstaff cross but the keeper turned the effort over the bar. From the subsequent Lee Martin corner Ogilvie nodded home.
Tom Hadler was in goal for the second half, saving well from Tsirlidis and showing good hands throughout.
It was a Wagstaff-Mbo combination again that led to Gills’ fourth, with Gills’ young striker heading home from close-range in the 69 minute. Cundle went close to making it 5-1 but the Gills had to settle for four on the night.
