Striker Cody McDonald is among the players awaiting news on whether they are wanted by the Gills next season.
The club have a couple of weeks to decide on which players they wish to retain and which to release.
Those they don’t want will be joining the hundreds of other professional players looking for options elsewhere.
Many of Gills’ rivals have already been busy, offering deals to current stars and waving goodbye to those who haven’t performed. Coventry have released nine players and Chesterfield 12.
But while there is no manager in charge at Priestfield, the 12 out of contract players must sit tight. They are entitled to speak to other clubs, however.
McDonald ended the season with 12 goals to his name, making it 81 in total over 223 games he has played for the Gills.
Fellow striker Rory Donnelly is another out of contact player but he’s unlikely to be back at the club, regardless. He is currently suspended for non-footballing issues.
A handful of loan players have also played their final games. Deji Oshilaja ends his season-long spell from Cardiff City while Harry Cornick and Joe Quigley both head back to Bournemouth.
