Gillingham face Chesterfield away in League 2 on Tuesday night in Gareth Ainsworth’s fourth game in charge after three successive draws

Manager Gareth Ainsworth’s hoping a bigger stadium helps to bring the best out of his players.

Ainsworth’s two away games so far have been at Harrogate and Salford, two relatively small stadiums where the weather conditions have made an impact.

The Gills have had to cope with windy conditions in both games that finished level. Ainsworth’s first game as Gillingham manager was at Harrogate, which finished 1-1. Saturday’s game at Salford ended two apiece.

Chesterfield away on Tuesday night will be Ainsworth’s fourth in charge and third on the road.

He said: “It’s a long way again, but we're ready to take on Chesterfield in an old-fashioned bigger stadium.

“Conditions will probably be a little bit better (than on Saturday at Salford) because these bigger stadiums don't let the conditions in and it becomes more of a purist game. I think we're good in that.

“I think we showed that against Colchester (at Priestfield) so we’re looking forward to that.”

Gillingham’s players left for Chesterfield yesterday (Monday) as the run of long trips continued.

Ainsworth said: “We are the most travelled team in the Football League, I think, out of the 92 this season.

“I want them to travel well together. I want them to embrace being on that coach and what we're doing. We enjoy being together.

“I’m really looking forward to getting stuck into Chesterfield.”

Ainsworth made three changes to his starting team on Saturday.

Armani Little replaced Jonny Williams in midfield, Oli Hawkins went upfront as Joe Gbode dropped to the bench and there was a change at the back as Shad Ogie stepped in for injured Andy Smith.

The manager explained his thinking, saying: “Smithy picked up a knock midweek so Shad played. I was really pleased with him. He was cramping up at the end, which he should be, because he hasn't played for so long.

“Armani Little’s the captain. He's assured, a very good player, and we know what we get from Armani.

“Oli Hawkins got a start because I think he's come off the bench and made real impacts lately.

“But not just for those reasons, third game in a week is always one that's potential for injuries and things.

“People will say: ‘Johnny had a fantastic game midweek, why is he out of the team?’ The reason is because I want him to have a lot more fantastic games and so go with it.

“Jonny came on (as substitute) and did his usual, busy around the place.

“Joe played well when he came on, showed probably some of the stuff he hasn't been showing in other games, so some real positives.”

The Gills head into the game with five straight draws behind them and just one defeat in their last eight League 2 games.

Chesterfield ended an impressive run of form with a thumping 4-0 loss at lowly Tranmere on Saturday. Prior to that they’d taken 16 points from a possible 18 in a six-game spell. That run came after four straight losses.

A defeat for Chesterfield against the Gills will all-but end their hopes of the play-offs in League 2 this season. The Gills start the night 18th in the table.
