Gillingham head coach Stephen Clemence hopes their newest addition helps to improve a key area of concern he highlighted in the job interview.
Newly signed right wing-back Remeao Hutton has six assists to his name this season and his crossing ability is one of his key strengths. It’s an area that Clemence knew needed fixing before he got the job at Gillingham.
More: Quality, not quantity for Gillingham
The Gills paid Swindon Town an undisclosed fee for the 25-year-old and Clemence could throw him straight into the starting XI this Saturday against Forest Green Rovers, assuming all of the paperwork on the deal is complete.
Clemence said: “When I arrived at the club one of the things I flagged up in my interview process was the lack of balls that were coming into the box and whether our strikers were getting enough service.
“Our strikers have probably taken some criticism this season for maybe not scoring enough goals but sometimes they may have had a lack of service. It is something we have worked on since I have been here.
“Those numbers are increasing and we are pleased with the direction that is going, but we have to keep it going.
“Remeao was flagged up to me a while ago. You can see the numbers he has produced over the last few years from a wide area, they are right up there competing probably against all leagues in the country.
“He has a number of assists, he gets balls into the box, he is athletic, can go past people and he wants to get better, he is the type of person we want in the club, the right personality, the right character. He will fit in nicely.”
Clemence praised the recruitment team for their work in getting the deal over the line with others teams competing against them for his signature, including fellow League 2 side Stockport County.
Clemence said: “I have to say, well done to the recruitment team and the owners for getting that one over the line because we did have some competition to sign him, we are delighted he has chosen us.
“He will add something, no doubt about it, but it is not just his responsibility, with the current formation we have been playing it is on our eights, our outside centre-halves, wing-backs, sometimes centre-forwards to get the ball into the box, it’s a team effort.”
