Gillingham have completed a deal to sign former Millwall man Scott Malone.
The left-back has been training with the Gills all summer and went with them on tour to Como but has now signed a contract with the League 2 side.
Malone played for the Gills in Como and looked good in the pre-season match against Charlton Athletic.
Manager Neil Harris was happy for the player to play and train with the Gills while looking at options elsewhere, with Championship sides showing an interest.
Malone, who plays on the left side in either defence or midfield, became a free agent following his release by Millwall, who he has played for in two separate spells.
He started his career at Wolves and went onto play for Bournemouth before his first stint at Millwall.
He joined Cardiff City in January 2015, despite interest from German giants Borussia Dortmund.
Malone has also played in the Championship for Fulham and then for Huddersfield in the Premier League before moving to Derby in the second tier and then a return to Millwall, playing 32 games for them last season before being released.
Millwall boss Gary Rowett, speaking about Malone’s release at he end of last season, told London News Online: “Scottie came in and did really, really well – in particular that first season when he was outstanding in the wing-back role. He’s a really good lad.
“He didn’t play as much, certainly second half of the season, maybe down to the switch of formation. That’s quite difficult to keep people fresh and happy.
“He was brilliant. Up until the last time he gave everything he had. He’s a fantastic footballer.”
The Gills have already signed left-back Max Clark but didn’t have an abundance of cover on that side, with Robbie McKenzie and Cheye Alexander preferring to play on the right.
He’ll now offer great experience and versatility down the left side for the Gills.
He’s likely to get minutes tomorrow (Tuesday) when Harris’ men play Cambridge United in a behind-closed-doors match and then Dagenham on Saturday.
