Gillingham boss Steve Evans was left frustrated at decisions made by his players in both boxes on Saturday.
The Gills missed the opportunity to put the game beyond Northampton after going two goals up and for the second Saturday running they let a two-goal lead slip from their grasp. The match at Priestfield ended 2-2.
Evans said: “We went 2-0 ahead and should have been four or five ahead, there was one team in the game.
“They have an aimless ball into the box and I need to have a look at the goal back to see where my defenders are, then the second one our defender gets outmuscled from a corner, outfought, and that is disappointing.
“There were two bits to it, there were the chances we didn’t take, four or five in the second half, Kyle Dempsey, Dominic Samuel, Robbie Cundy, Vadaine Oliver, there was an open goal if he passed to Olly Lee, but by the same token we have to defend properly as well.
“We have one or two individuals who are continually making mistakes, but we have got what we have got, it is a huge disappointment.
“It is a difficult scoreline at 2-0, we have suffered at Oxford (last week the Gills went from leading 2-0 to losing 3-2) and here.
“You need the third goal to go in, it is quite simple, then the game really does open up and you can see fours and five.
“We had some big chances but we didn’t do enough.
“At the moment we haven’t got one or two we need, especially when you are trying to defend when teams gamble. We are looking at individuals and we were looking at individuals last week at Oxford.
“We have not been able to defend in two games in two key periods of time, last Saturday and this one.”
