Joe Gbode struck a winner from the penalty spot to send Gillingham’s under-18s into the third round of the FA Youth Cup.
Gbode’s second half strike was the only goal of the game against Plymouth Argyle’s academy side at Priestfield on Monday night.
Mark Moss’ youth team had defeated Corinthian Casuals 4-1 in the first round and earned themselves a tie against Wigan Athletic at home in round three after a narrow victory over visiting Plymouth.
Match-winner Gbode came off the bench for the youth team just two days after starting for Gillingham’s senior side in their 1-1 FA Cup match at Dagenham.
Taite Holtam - the first-team’s back-up keeper - also played in goal and he made a super double save to keep it level early in the second half, denying Freddie Issaka and Jack Endacott in quick succession.
Gbode came on with 56 minutes played and 20 minutes later he tucked away from the penalty spot after Ronald Sithole had been fouled in the area.
