Fleetwood Town are beaten by Sheffield Wednesday but Gillingham's weekend visitors Rotherham United still need a result; League 1 set for final day thriller

Gillingham fans were given a taster of what’s to come on Saturday after a nerve-racking Tuesday night - and they weren't even playing.

Relegation rivals Fleetwood Town started the night level on points with the Gills and after a dramatic game against play-off chasing Sheffield Wednesday, that’s how it remains.

Fleetwood were playing their game in hand on Tuesday and were leading 2-1 against Wednesday at one stage - had it stayed that way then only a win on Saturday for the Gills would have given them hope of survival.

But the South Yorkshire side rallied late on, winning the match 3-2 thanks to Lee Gregory’s hat-trick, his final two goals coming inside a minute. Gregory is a former Millwall player who starred under Gills boss Neil Harris when the pair were at the South London club.

The result means the Gills, who are fourth from bottom and in the last of four relegation places, remain behind Fleetwood on goal difference with one to play.

While one South Yorkshire club did the business for the Gills on Tuesday, Rotherham slipped up.

Second-placed Rotherham were leading Sunderland 1-0, which would have meant their automatic promotion was all-but secure ahead of a trip to Gillingham. The Gills might have fancied their chances more against a side with promotion already in the bag.

But unfortunately Sunderland fought back to level the match at 1-1, thanks to a late own goal, which means Rotherham head to Priestfield needing a result. They could still win the title but anything less than a win could mean that they are leapfrogged by MK Dons and drop into the play-off places.

Gillingham must avoid defeat and will be cheered from afar by MK Dons fans. If Rotherham don't win, then they could snatch second place.

It all adds up to another tense final day showdown for the Gills as they welcome Rotherham - who could be backed by up to 2,850 fans - to Priestfield for a 12.30pm kick-off.
