Max Ehmer’s Priestfield return is in doubt after picking up an injury.
The former Gills captain - who moved to Bristol Rovers in the summer - picked up a shoulder injury when slipping on an artificial pitch last week. It meant he missed his team’s impressive 3-1 victory over Portsmouth.
Ehmer has captained Rovers since his summer move but their season hasn’t gone well and are currently without a permanent manager after Paul Tisdale became the second to be sacked by the club this season.
Tommy Widdrington, in caretaker charge, said: “We know there’s damage (to the shoulder) and there is a possibility he’ll need something done to it but it’s manageable until the end of the season.
“With a bit of luck and Gillingham on the horizon, with his history, I would like to think he’s champing at the bit and knocking on the door.”
Ehmer suffered with shoulder issues while at Gillingham. In March last year he dislocated his shoulder in the match against AFC Wimbledon, the second time he had done it that season. Despite the injury he returned a week later to help the Gills record a 2-2 draw at Sunderland - his last appearance for the club.
His troubles began in December 2018 when he dislocated a collarbone in the game at Scunthorpe.
Speaking about the injury last March, he said: “I wear a strap every day, for training and playing. It supports it all and I get it done every day, it’s something I have done religiously since the Scunthorpe injury.”
He departed the Gills after making 250 appearances for the club.
Ehmer faced Gillingham earlier in the season but it wasn’t a good night for him as Steve Evans’ side won 2-0.
