Boss Justin Edinburgh is optimistic for a prosperous new year at Gillingham.
With the early-season injury problems behind them, Gills are beginning to put some results together as they chase the leading sides.
Winning a place in the League 1 play-offs remains the goal, even if it’s a long shot.
Edinburgh said: “I believe in the group. We have them fit and competitive and getting consistency in team selection.
“It is showing in the team’s performance and points return.
“The home form is starting to gain some momentum and it is about trying to get that away form to run with it. The away performance (at Peterborough) merited something.”
Gillingham took a point from Peterborough with a last-gasp strike.
This time last year the Gills were challenging at the top of the division but are heading into the new year in the bottom half.
Edinburgh added: “We know that from our experiences last season it is not about how you start, it’s completely about how you finish.
“We just hope we keep the fitness side and we can gain some real momentum and have a push.
“The players believe it and I think the fans do, too. Everyone connected to the club has a real belief and that showed in the boys’ performance (on Boxing Day).”
Next up for the Gills is a trip to Millwall on Friday night.
And while it will be another tough outing for Edinburgh’s men, he believes his team are worth fearing.
He said: “People underestimate the form we are on. We know what to expect.
“We know it will be hostile but we know we will be backed by another fantastic support like we were at Peterborough.
“It will be another game where we will have to be resilient and competitive.
“Hopefully, we will come away with another result.”
