Doug Loft’s goal celebration on Saturday was a sign that not everybody has been convinced by the summer signing from Port Vale.
He may have hushed the critics in the crowd at the weekend – as his celebration insinuated - but boss Justin Edinburgh isn’t one of those that needed convincing of the player’s talents.
Loft scored an injury-time goal to claim a draw against Colchester. His earlier free-kick in the game led to a goal for Max Ehmer.
Edinburgh feels that Loft’s only problem is that he has tried too hard to impress.
“I think he has been excellent,” said the Gills boss, who has named Loft in the starting XI for all nine of his games in charge.
“He tries to lead the team, sometimes he might try too hard.
“He set one up and scored one (on Saturday) and for me he showed bravery, he is always getting on the ball.
“From the stats we had from Saturday’s game, Doug was in possession of the ball the most and had the highest success rate of passes and that shows his bravery.
“Whether or not people are convinced by him, I think it shows he is a brave character who will never hide, he wants to get on the ball, wants to make things happen and he certainly did that on Saturday.”
