Gillingham boss Steve Evans wants three more additions in the transfer window but isn’t expecting to spend any money from Joe Walsh’s sale.
Walsh moved to Championship side QPR this week for an undisclosed fee but that money is most likely to be used to keep the club stable amid the current financial pressures.
QPR met the price-tag for the 18-year-old keeper, winning the race to sign him ahead of another Championship team from the Midlands. There was also a club in the Scottish Premiership who made a late bid. It’s been reported that the deal for Walsh could potentially be worth around £500,000.
Boss Evans admits he’s unlikely to see any of the Walsh transfer money added to the playing budget this season.
Asked if there would be additional funds, Evans said: “The answer is no. We set our budgets at the start of the season, what we could do and what we couldn’t. We expected Joe to go, between myself and the chairman, he factors those numbers in.
“We are still active. We are still looking for a striker to complement what we have got and we are still look at wide players and we are still considering a central midfield player, if it is the right type, so we are looking, we are active, we are in conversations.”
Evans admits some clubs are reluctant to let players leave because of fixture congestion.
He said: "I was speaking to a Championship manager about a player I was interested in, who in normal times would be allowed to come out, but they have something close to 30 matches to play between now and the end of the season, which has to be concluded at the beginning of May. They will need the squad, the players, but it doesn’t stop us picking up the phone and asking the question because we need to strengthen ourselves.”
The Gills have replaced young keeper Walsh with a new face, bringing in former Stevenage goalie Sacha Bastien. He is with the squad for the trip to Sunderland.
Gillingham face Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday and their only additional injury doubt is to Tom O’Connor (groin).
