Gillingham boss Steve Evans isn’t interested in the league table right now.
Victory over Oxford United on Saturday lifted the Gills up to fourth after their opening five games of the campaign.
Wins over relegated Championship side Wigan, a well-resourced Blackpool outfit and much-fancied weekend visitors Oxford have made for an encouraging start.
It’s one step at a time for Evans, however, who said: “At this stage of the season I am looking at getting 52-53 points and we can have a fresh look then.
“We can’t get carried away. We can’t lose our identity which is to work hard. We know the minute you come away from the level you don’t get a result.
“We have a great spirit, the boys have taken to each other, they meet up and go for dinner, they visit each other in their social bubble and they care.”
Evans will be hoping to challenge for a play-off place this season and the statistics suggest he may well do that. The Gills have managed to continue their good form at the back end of the curtailed 2019/20 season, albeit with big changes to personnel.
Gillingham have lost just two league games from their last 22.
The last win came through hard work and good finishing. Evans will hoping to keep on improving his young team.
He said: “I said before the game (on Saturday) that if we could win the game it would be a great start. I did sit them down at the end and say we can be better than that, we had a shape and discipline and organisation and two or three chances.
“We have set our standard in terms of discipline, and organisation and work-rate, I think we can do better on the ball, we gave away a few sloppy passes in the first half which gave an advantage back to a good side.”
He added: “In performance terms we will get much better, we know that, but for that we must all continue to work hard on the training ground.”
