Gillingham travel to Carlisle with confidence on the back of recent performances.

Goals remain a problem, with the Gills going four games without a goal in all competitions.

But manager Neil Harris is certain they’ll put that right and has taken great encouragement from last weekend’s goalless drew with Walsall and the midweek penalty shoot-out win over League 1 Exeter in the Carabao Cup.

“The last two games I’ve really enjoyed us,” said Harris.

“Saturday we were the better team and deserved to win the game, and Tuesday we were the much better team and definitely deserved to win.

“It’s a real positive for us. It’s the fact we’ve gone from looking really shaky at the back to two really solid clean-sheet performances and, Carlisle, we go with real confidence into that game.

“I am patient and everyone knows I’m being patient and I’m asking people to be patient.

“We’ll get it right, we’ll move in the right direction, we have to make those small steps and the last two games have been steps and we look forward to Carlisle.”

Harris believes it’s a matter of time before Gillingham start finding the net, having seen his side create a number of chances in recent matches.

They had enough opportunities to put Exeter away in the 90 minutes, it’s just a case of getting that first goal.

“How many times have I said we haven’t scored a goal but how good have we been creating chances?” said Harris.

“Goals will come, I know that. As much as I want them now, whilst we’re playing better and getting in the right areas, we’ll keep creating chances and goals will definitely come.

“It’s just that end product. Once we get one, we’ll get two, three or four in a single game and hopefully the floodgates will open for us to score regularly.”

Gillingham travel to Cumbria today in preparation for a Carlisle side who have taken five points from their opening four games in League 2.

They’re a point better off than the Gills, who are out to right the wrongs of their last away game, a 3-0 loss at Tranmere.

Harris said: “We’ll make sure we’ve got a pool at the hotel so the players can use the pool to try and get the journey out of their legs and then it’s just down to mentality when you go to somewhere like Carlisle

“You just have to be at it from the first whistle and, on the back of Tranmere, we’ll be ready.”
