Player-of-the-year John Egan has warned against complacency as the Gills look to improve on their mid-table position in League 1.

Optimism is high after a positive end to the 2014/15 season but Egan knows they have to work hard to make those improvements.

He used the rapid demise of Leyton Orient, where former Gills assistant Andy Hessenthaler has now moved to, as a case in point.

Egan said: “I won’t come out shouting about doing this or that this season. We finished 12th and anything on improving that would be good.

“Football is a funny game. Last year Leyton Orient would have probably said after losing in the play-off final they want to go straight up the next year. They ended up going down.

“You can never really speak out in public about what you can do but we will have a chat amongst ourselves and the manager, we will set realistic targets and hopefully we can achieve that.

“We have got Wigan, Blackpool and Millwall down from the Championship and it’s not going to be easy for them either.

“We will be going out to beat every team. We will discuss our expectations privately and try and reach them.”
